Orange County Photographer Offers Insights into Photographing Senior Boys
Photographing high school senior boys can bea unique challenge. In this article, an Orange County photographer offers suggestions on how to do this well.
The following are some suggestions I've picked up from listening to (add name) and other photographers for photographing senior boys.
- Despite his preferences, make sure you get at least one great conservative headshot. While this may not be his picture of choice right now, mothers will often be interested in purchasing such a headshot.
- For any senior, boy or girl, use ProSelect to create a proof sheet of some design or pages that the client's can order from. While seniors like to change things up, by showing them a layout of their pictures, with a pre-designed proof sheet they have a starting point from which they can begin their customization.
- Before you present your images to your client, narrow the pictures down to the very best images. You want to present a few excellent options for your senior. If you provide too many options, it is possible he will be overwhelmed by all of the choices.
- Shoot a number of distinct backgrounds and styles. Senior portraits are an emotional item for many. If he sees several terrific images from different settings, it is likely he (or more likely his mom) will purchase some of each style, which will of course, increase the total purchase price.
- Provide at least one free image with your copyright on it and post it your client's Facebook account. All of the senior's friend will be able to see the image. This is great marketing and exposure for your business.
- Before you can use any of the above tips, you have to get the senior's in the door. Just as in weddings, where it is often the bride and not the groom which is most likely to spend time and resources on pictures, in general, the Moms not the boys themselves are the most motivated to make pictures a priority. To market around this resistance offer a $100 half hour session. If he believes he will be in and out rather quickly, he will be more likely to book the session. However, don't back these sessions back to back. Often his mom will convince him to stay longer.
Senior boys are both a challenge and an opportunity for a professional photographer. While they are at times reluctant to book and require often require more prep than does their female counterpart
, in many areas of the country this is an underserved market a photographer effectively utilize.
